Arms folded, weight shifted back, cap pulled low: this small figure leans on nothing but air. The "Luftlehner" (air-leaner) continues Hepp's series of "Wandlehner" – carved figures that have been propping themselves against walls since 2013 – except that here the support has been taken away, leaving a stance somewhere between studied nonchalance and quiet unease. Like all of Hepp's work it was made without a model: first the rough form with a chainsaw, then fine carving by hand, and finally thin watercolour glazes through which the grain of the spruce remains visible.

About the Artist Johannes Hepp

The sculptor Johannes Hepp (b. 1986 in Werneck near Würzburg) lives and works in Freiburg, where he studied at the Edith Maryon School of Art and now teaches there himself. At the heart of his work are small human figures that he releases from a single piece of soft wood, usually poplar or lime. Thin watercolour glazes and the visible traces of his tools keep the wood present. In 2018 Hepp received the Cultural Advancement Prize of the City of Würzburg.
