A miniature altarpiece. Two silver-leafed wooden wings swing open to reveal a panel of warmly glowing cherry wood, in front of which a woman in a blue tracksuit stands. Upright, in trainers, looking straight ahead. The cherry wood wings with their reddish translucent edges and the silvered inner faces lend the object a sacral note that Hepp immediately grounds again with his everyday-dressed figure, barely the size of a hand. The principle of opening and closing has run through his work since the "Kistenobjekte" (box objects). Only the viewer's movement completes the sculpture – and with it the question of whether these wings are protecting this woman or releasing her.

About the Artist Johannes Hepp

The sculptor Johannes Hepp (b. 1986 in Werneck near Würzburg) lives and works in Freiburg, where he studied at the Edith Maryon School of Art and now teaches there himself. At the heart of his work are small human figures that he releases from a single piece of soft wood, usually poplar or lime. Thin watercolour glazes and the visible traces of his tools keep the wood present. In 2018 Hepp received the Cultural Advancement Prize of the City of Würzburg.
