About the Artist Gregor Passens

Gregor Passens (b. 1974 in Berchtesgaden) is a Bavarian sculptor. After training at the woodcarving school in Berchtesgaden, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, among others as a master student of Nikolaus Gerhart, and later worked there as an artistic associate. One of his best-known motifs is KONG – a King Kong figure that Passens constructs from scaffolding, pipes and dark sheeting and lets "appear" in changing places, from the assembly hall of the Munich Academy to Santiago de Chile. King Kong, the wanderer between jungle and city transformed again and again by new cultural contexts, is here a traveller like the artist himself. "KONG BOZZETTI" is the small-scale model version of this giant – a bozzetto, the kind of preliminary study sculptors have traditionally made. In miniature, it preserves the force and the improvised, found-object character of the large figure, making the travelling, ever-changing shape of KONG tangible.
